This can be done by connecting your iPhone to a computer and using iTunes/Finder to initiate the reset process.

  • A PC or a MAC
  • A cable to connect your iPhone to the computer
  • An Internet or WiFi connection
  • Upto 60 minutes

Here’s how to factory reset your iPhone without the passcode

Step 1: Turn off your iPhone

  • For iPhone with Face ID: Press and hold both the side button and the Volume down button until the power off slider appears. Then, drag the slider to power off your iPhone.
  • For iPhones without the Face ID: If your iPhone has a Home button or a top button, press and hold either the top button or the Home button until the power off slider appears. Then, drag the slider to power off your iPhone.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone to your computer (Mac or PC) with the cable

As you connect the cable to your iPhone, hold the side button at the same time and do not release it. Then, continue to press the side button until the Apple logo appears. Do not release the side button until you see an image of a computer and a cable.

*For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Volume Down button instead. They don’t have a side button.

*For iPhone 6s and earlier or iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold the Home button. They don’t have a side button.

Step 3: Now restore your iPhone from your computer

On your Mac

  • Open the Finder or iTunes and locate your iPhone in the sidebar under Locations.
  • Select Trust [your device] on your Mac if necessary.
